Memorial Day -First Email

Julia,

Let's start at the beginning...here is a rough description of the "set" that we are designing from the script that Cecila wrote:

A note from the author:

The stage will be presented as three banners arranged ampitheatrically in a semi-circle. The banners should be supported from behind, and should be about 6 feet in width and fourteen feet in height. The three banners will be designed in a sweeping, unified visual presentation with bold, evocative images and patterns. The colors must be beautiful and the lines of the patterns must be strong, and formally composed, as if referencing the greek ampitheatre or the epic Romantic war painting.

The play, ideally, will be performed in several different locations in the city or town where it is presented: these could include a public outdoor space (performed at sunset), a large store or corporation, a cabaret, an art gallery, a community center, or a warehouse of studios. The underlined sections of the script indicate items specific to the city where the play is performed, to be replaced as the company sees fit, according to the location of the performance.

So the "set" is actually a backdrop made of a few different pieces, that needs to be able to be transported and rebuilt at different locations.
We have revised the design so that it will be made of five parts (A-E on the attached images). A, B and C are three different structures with a white transparent fabric or netting stretched taut across. I wanted these pieces to reference a futuristic blank slate or canvas, a place where Cecila could project images upon yet remain a neutral backdrop for the actors.
Behind them, structure D, holds 3 hanging flags. The flags hang veritcally, and are only attached at the top, so they can blow with the wind (if there is any) throughout the performance.

I would love to sit down with you and discuss these plans, I have yet to finalize sizes. I think you should do this as your senior project, we can work together with your mother to work on construction plans and I know people that would like to aid in the actual building of the set (boys that want to be men, ya know what I'm saying). I also would need your help with researching fabrics, materials, and ordering supplies.

My schedule is actually very flexible so lets figure out a time to meet, how is Saturday afternoon? I can drive out to you or you are more than welcome to come to me....(it's an easy drive and there is always parking).

Let me know what you think!

Sofie
